Lack of Clarity Misleads Others Earlier this week Tesco Mobile (a division of the UK's largest retailer published a "Top 100 Inventions In History". The survey asked 4,000 people to compile a list of the 100 most important inventions in history. The results are a not too surprising collection of both inventions, innovations and adaptations. A shame as this will only lead to further "educate" the public into believing that innovation and invention are the same.In the research, The Telephone … [Read more...] about Innovation and Invention… get confused again
GDPR Get your head out the sand – Part 2 for sole traders and Micro businesses
GDPR is just around the corner and it is time to get your head out of the sand if you are a sole trader or micro-business. In my recent piece - GDPR Checklist – for sole traders and Micro businesses, I summarised my learning on the recent journey for RapidBI. In that journey, I thought I had covered 99% of the bases. But it seems I missed one KEY POINT. And this one is a big one! I have since added it, but as many won't read all the piece I thought it worth a short piece of its own. ICO … [Read more...] about GDPR Get your head out the sand – Part 2 for sole traders and Micro businesses

Amazon Kindle, trainers and a Virtual Library
Amazon Kindle, trainers and a virtual library Technology is changing all the time, but one thing that has moved (historically) least is display technology. Is the Kindle e-book reader from Amazon a valuable tool for professionals? Is it worth the money and more importantly the weight and space in our already busy lives? The launch of "virtual paper" (e-Ink) displays is one of the 'newer' technologies, and being in a household that devours books I thought it was time to explore these, both for … [Read more...] about Amazon Kindle, trainers and a Virtual Library

Do Training Programmes actually work? Interview
A few weeks ago I was interviewed by PDH Academy.I was asked some interesting questions. Questions that on reflection I should have been able to answer easily. But actually in a wide context were more difficult than I expected.Having thought about these, I would urge all readers of this to apply the same questions internally. What do we need to do to ensure that we deliver what the business NEEDS and not what it WANTS. This can be harder than it sounds. They also wanted to focus on … [Read more...] about Do Training Programmes actually work? Interview
E-learning – making to transition from classroom to electronic learning
Following my presentation to the BCS special interest learning group last month, I was involved in a discussion about the use of visuals in learning. The question was posed - What techniques are 'in' and which are 'out' ?My immediate reaction was nothing and everything - it's not what you do but the way that you do it - anything works as long as it is congruent with the style, context and learning need. But this got me thinking in the wider sense. In a classroom the 'screen' pr … [Read more...] about E-learning – making to transition from classroom to electronic learning

Introduction to One Word HR Trends SurveyWhat is the One word HR trends survey 2016? Early in 2015 we ran a simple survey among HR professionals. They were given 10 topics and asked for one word which represented there understanding or meaning for that word or phrase. This produced some interesting results. Not my usual blog - July 7 Bombings 2005 - 2015 a VERY personal reflection. Two weeks ago I received an email asking if I would be prepared to produce a case study in case the press wanted the views of a volunteer as the ten year anniversary for 7/7 (July 7 Bombings in London) approached. This caused me to reflect as to what I would, and would not share about that day. It was tough on many, many levels. The agreed output from that discussion is published in full below.
