So what have been the challenging topics for HR professionals in 2018 and what will business demand of HR in 2019 and beyond?

Many of my followers know that I am active on LinkedIn. Over the past 2 years, I have been recording the themes and topics that HR professionals discuss. As a way of understanding what those hot topics are I have produced the graphic below. It shows the frequency of some of the most popular terms used in discussion titles.

Some predictions into HR trends for 2019
Like it or not, automation is high on the agenda for HR. Self-service, automated recruitment etc, will lead to fewer people in the average HR department.
Over the last 20 years, HR policies and HR procedures have moved from tools to help, to ball and chains around us. Simplification will be the name of the game. Less is more. Increasingly employees are demanding flexible working, with it will need to thin down on many of our policies and procedures. Many seem to believe that flexible working will lead to more policies. We have seen that this reduces flexible working.
Trust and transparency is vital. Employees are looking to see if they can trust their managers. asa time goes on, and with the changes and impact we have seen with GDPR, transparency around talent management, processes etc will be vital to ensure we retain the best people.
For years HR has been saying to employees, that they are responsible for their own development. We have espoused that managers should coach their people. The reality is that we often do not allow time for peoples self-development, and most managers are not capable of coaching their people. Training of employees and in particulate management skills will return. It has to. We have a generation of managers that are ill-equipped to lead the future. HR has neglected the development of organisational managers for too long.
The big one is that HR teams will get smaller. We are increasingly automating our HR processes. Once this is done, there will be no need for large HR teams. The role of HR will change. We need to be seen as a service provider, not a barrier. To be successful for a career in HR we need to ensure that HR people are not just competent in the traditional things, but that HR are IT literate, that they are comfortable with data analytics. that they understand company politics. that they understand that the ultimate role of HR is to make itself redundant.
