Empty four assessment

The Empty Four Competency Assessment approach.

Introduction to the “Empty Four”

The Empty Four is a concept to help managers in the assessment of work place competency.

The Empty Four

Empty four assessment

When assessing candidates or members of staff against a standard or competency framework, it is usual for there to be four levels or sets of descriptions. These can often be described as:

No evidence
Some evidence
Meets requirements
Exceeds requirements

Scoring

Each of these levels is often given both a description and a score.

The score is often 0, 1, 2 or 3.

The concept of the empty 4 is that the top or “4” score has no definition and it is up to the assessors to define in on a case by case basis.
