How to be a Real People Person

How to be a real People Person

Many of us claim to be a “people person” but what does this mean? Are we all not people people, but just appreciate different things in each other? or is there more to it than that?

In Human Resources and recruiting many people in this professionals claim to be a “people person”, are we? what might this mean?

While surfing I came across an interesting article, but due to the language I daren’t link to it so here is a re-write in business friendly language with a few of my own observations thrown in:

People are everywhere aren’t they?

As soon as you leave your home or other place of “safety” we start bumping into or are disrupted by other people.

Yet, despite all this practice at wandering around doing our everyday business, what is it that keeps the majority of the population utterly unable to function properly in any form of situation, without annoying and impacting the actions of others?

Why is it that ‘people’, after all these years of civilisation, still think that doorways are a good place to pointlessly stand? How is it even possible to imagine that you are the only person who wants to walk through the only gap in the wall?

Exactly why is it impossible to walk down a high street now without being interrupted about joining the AA or the RAC or having some fluffy jumpered “individual” try and smile their way into your wallet to save a shrub or something? If people wanted to be repeatedly bothered by irrelevantly grinning naive people with massive ideas, no life-experience and an ironic t-shirt, they would have gone for a pint and a sandwich at the local student union bar.

Please can mums with pushchairs stop walking slowly, right next to each other, like a Mothercare steamroller taking up the whole pavement? And while you are at it remember the people in front of you have ankles and would like to return home with them intact.

Those blokes that sell newspapers, learn to say a word properly, it’s not like you have a  complicated script now, is it?

Traffic wardens, go away, nobody even thinks for a second you are a Policeman, you look like a delivery man with a stupid tiny computer strapped to your arm.

The crowds, with your aimless milling, stopping and changing direction with an indication whatsoever.

To those inconsiderate people that walk talking or texting on their mobile phones without any consideration for the other users of the pavement, not looking where they are going or the hassle they cause.

To the mobility scooter riders that motor along at 20mph expecting pedestrians to get out of their way.

To the smokers that create clouds of smoke outside café’s and bars – lovely to walk through…NOT!.

Is it just me that thinks, in all honesty, that if I were facing the reality of a Zombie Apocalypse I’d probably enjoy going to the shops more than I do now? That the milling, aimless, grunting idiots would be only imperceptibly less annoying than the live ones we have now?

Back to the car park to drive home… OK people you know you are going to need change for the parking machines – why not bring some with you? The ticket machines are not that difficult to use… honestly. Why is it that drivers seem to lose all sense of direction and manoeuvring skills in a car park? You need to drive close enough to the machine to lean out of the window to put the ticket into the barrier… not park a mile away, get out and walk there! Some of us want to get home!

What happens to them? – did they leave their brain on the shopping list?

Don’t you people have better things to do with your time?

But of course I am a people person… I love people… but I couldn’t eat a whole one ;)
