Social media – hired or fired because of it?
Public social media is now a part of many people’s every day life, and as time goes by, increasingly it is being used as a tool against individuals. With many organisations publicly encouraging people to “go social” and often their customers wanting the opposite, it is only a matter of time before people are either “silenced” altogether – of firms and organisations will be outed for restrictive inappropriate behaviour
This research from Tribehr has some interesting factors:
Point #2 is an interesting one.
For example if information is not personal, company confidential.. or determines what is and is not “confidential”?
So if your company puts out in a press release that they are working for xxx company (public knowledge) and you tweet or say on facebook you are working on the xxx account, without giving specific details is that confidential data?
Is posting that i to a small private “group” the same as putting it on a public feed? for example is saying something to your friends in a pub the same as standing at Hyde park’s speakers corner and shouting it out publicly? are they the same?
so organisations need clear rules and examples and educate their people? what about sub-contractors or outsourced workers where the policy is different? What do we say to who?
