Introduction to TPMA
In late 2008 the IITT and BCS announced the trainer standard – TPMA – Performance Monitoring & Assessment Service. This new qualification from the IITT & BCS aims to improve the quality of technical and IT training.
Why introduce the TPMA?
The IITT and BCS have for some time identifyed the need to raise the bar in IT training and the training of trainers.
They (the IITT & BCS) believe that to be a great trainer you need to have a sound grasp of your subject matter (underpinning knowledge) and an even better grasp of how people learn (learning psychology). You also need the abilty to build an effective rapport with learners so that you enhance rather than hinder their process of learning. The only way to judge a trainer’s effectiveness is to watch them in action, to see how a relationship develops and to witness the creation of trust between trainer and learner.
Every interaction with a learner is a moment of truth – an opportunity to open new learning possibilities or slam doors on dawning comprehension. Just like our learners, we trainers are also on a learning journey towards being better trainers, a key component in that journey is open, honest and transparent feedback based upon real meaningful assessment of live performance. This new qualification provides an affirmation of our skills, an opportunity to learn and develop personal excellence and sets a new benchmark of performance that must result in a better experience for our learners.
This monitoring and assessment service, which is authorised, governed and monitored by both the IITT and leading Awarding Body Oxford Cambridge & RSA Examinations (OCR), is a record of the training professional’s quality of performance in a live environment aligned to National Standards – a real quality benchmark for trainers

TPMA just for IT training?
While the TPMA process has been developed in the IT world, the standard (in our opinion) is a good entry level qualification and delivery standard for anyone who needs to deliver training either as a core part of their job or as an adhoc role.
The standard to be achieved is appropriate for any manager or subject matter expert (SME) who needs to communicate and train others.
