Being Brilliant Everyday #cipd14

A master class with Alan Watkins. Coherence – the secret science of brilliant leadership.

This blog is written live and may contain errors.

I am optimistic about the future, as I believe that human beings are absolutly awesome.

if you think change is fast now, get ready, for this is as slow as it will ever be.

the pace of change is now at an inflection point, the rate of change is extraordinary compared to what has come before.

humans massivly underestimate what our potential is – we have not even glanced at what we are capable of.

to date we have been growing horazontally – learning new skills etc. it is learning. this is profoundly different, its now about depth not breadth. it is now about vertical development.

most of what we have been doing in the past was learning not development – learnt not developed

abstract thinking only starts at the age of 11, in the same way we need to look at people development.

many executives at the top of business may look 40 or 50 on the outside, but 14years in the inside. learnt lots of things, but not developed. the tools people use are the same they were using at the age of 14.

vertical development is a game changer approach

INTEGRATED PERFORMANCE MODEL

Results are derived from behaviours.

you have to focus on behaviour, but that is not enough.

how a person thinks leads to behaviour change – how they think about the people asking for change.

you do not get behaviour change unless you engage in discussion about how they think

feeling impacts thinking, and thinking impacts feeling.

if you want to change how people think, you need to change how they feel

emotions drive feelings

most people do not differenciate the two

physiology underpinns it all.

results>behaviour>thinking>feeling>emotion>physiology

physiology>emotion>feeling>thinking>behaviour>results

emotions – are energy-in-motion… the sounds and sensations of our biological data. (stomach rumble, heart beat, etc…

what we think, and how we think it is driven by the bio signals entering our mind, for example if a stranger approaches us and kicks us or touches us.. we respond differently, i.e. thinking changed by emotions.

when you take an average…you lose all the important factors.

when we are under pressure, the brain shuts off the frontal lobe. this is a survival strategy. If we can learn to generate coherence in our physiology, we can re engage frontal lobe and smart thinking returns

when people breath in a rythmic way, we can see control return easily

practice with breathing exercuses can change confidence and thinking

to know you can control your physology you control your thinking. Do not let others control your physiology

one of the biggest myths in psychology is that you need to get pumped up or adrelynflowing… or more relaxed.. neither are true, what really determines performance is being in a positive mental state.

humans are operating with 200k year old software and never had an upgrade

as an effective leader we need highly developed emotional literacy. we typically describe 12 emotions, there are 34,000

if you want to be brilliant every day, then we need to control our physiology?

can I turn any emotion on…on demand?

most people stay in an emption until an external trigger changes it… for the beeter or worse. being able to change your state is a game changer
