HR must embrace social media & technologies

Technology and the ability for people to connect and communicate is occurring at an ever faster rate.
No longer are the news channels the first to have the “news”, it is now more often to be people “on the ground” using their twitter, instagram, pinterest or googleplus accounts to communicate with their network.

This morning I saw the images of the mars lander on social media before the BBC. The BBC mentioned the landing, but it took them almost 20 minutes before they showed an image.

In business this has massive impacts too. Sure some organisations – notably public sector, ban all social media about or related to work, but many, many private companies are embracing what social media can do for them. This is a race. If your snooze… you lose!

Many HR and management teams seek to block what they cannot control, and yet we are increasingly seeing recruiters use social media to validate candidates. It cannot be one rule for recruitment and another for “business as usual”.

Organizations that learn to trust and empower their people will have wonderful advocates, but equally when there is a problem, firms need to allow individuals concerns to be listened to internally. One of the biggest reasons why employees “vent” on social media, is that “middle” management block “feedback”. This has always been the case throughout modern history, but now employees and customers have another voice. Its best to listen and communicate than attempt to block.

All blocking does is force people to go underground and post anonymously, and this will encourage negative comments – there is no reason to give positive information from an anonymous account is there?

Time to embrace social media, and change management communications and cultures at the same time.
