#cipd14 Give and take

A revolutionary approach to success

Adam Grant – University of Pennsylvania

Author of Give and Take The book on Amazon

This is types live, please excuse any typos!

chaired by Peter Cheese

this is an opportunity for us to reflect as individuals and in our organisations.

Adam – why is there paranoia in our organisations.

Reciprocity Styles

Takers…..

Givers….

givers provide their knowledge. we want to add value

most of us reserve giving as we know there are takers.

Matcher – a balance of give & take

Which style sinks to the bottom

consistantly – givers are the least performers.

the more givers in a business, the better the org performs.

takers rise quickly. but fall quickly

matchers generally perform the best.

givers are split between the top 25% of performers, and the bottom 25% of performers, they are at opposite ends. takers and matchers are often clustered in the middle of the performance scale.

how to build a culture of givers in your org

  1. selection – avoid hiring takers…. you will be left with givers and matchers. in the presence of givers, matchers will “go with the flow”
  2.  redefine giving –
  3.  change your reward system

agreeable, disagreeable, giver, taker…matrix

agreeable takers fool you the most

takers rationalise that others are takers.

if you only measure individual success, you will only reward takers. you need to reward collaborations. we need to reward giving behaviours, and this is recognised and rewarded.

you need a culture of where people ask for things. research suggests that 90% of all giving starts with a request.

if people don’t ask, you will have a lot of frustrated givers, not knowing who to help,

the reciprocity ring – www.humaxnetworks.com

pronoia – the delusional belief that people are plotting your success
