Social Media – Give before receiving

Social Media – Give before receiving

Yesterday, on returning to my office from a business trip I had the usual swamp of emails to clear. I don’t know about you, but I am finding it harder and harder to sort much of the spam from potentially useful messages.

I am an outlook users, and over the years I have set up a number of filters to move certain types of posts to help both inbox management, along with managing much of the 200+ spam emails I get a day.
One of my folder sets is for LinkedIn messages, invitations, group discussions etc.

You want what?

One such message was from a contact I know, but do not know well, emailed me asking for a testimonial. Nothing wrong with that, but usually people ask for testimonials when they are new to LinkedIn, or when they feel at threat, and are looking for a new job/ role.

Now I don’t mind being asked for a testimonial, but it got me thinking. You are asking ME to do some work, but have you paid it forward? Have you given before you receive?
Have you given without the expectation of receiving?

I looked at this particular person and their profile and they had given very few testimonials themselves, and yet here they were asking for one!

Please I ask you – if you expect others to give to you… how about giving first?
