Twitter – unfollow people that don’t engage with you
Do you follow lots of people that don’t add value to your network? Would you like to unfollow anyone that has not engaged with you?
Twitter is more than just about collecting followers, it is about providing a 2 way communication and value add to the receiver of the tweets.
Twitter is many things to many people, my main account @rapidbi is a business feed which is used for marketing our business. It is important to us that people find the messages of value and either engage in discussion or at least ‘pass the message on’ vis a ReTweet.
Well I did and could not find any application that would do this so…..
I had an application written.
The concept is simple, if a person has sent you an @ message – or you have @ them then they are added to a white list, then 100 of those that are not on the list are unfollowed.. simples.
So MY definition of engagement (or adding value) in twitter is someone that has sent a message (@) to me or I have sent a message to them (espcially RTs).
This ‘product’ was developed for my own uses and is functional but not exactly good looking. If you want to try it out (at your own risk) you can here:
Login through Oath and the software will search for tweets. It will then present you with 100 people not on your white list. Check them out – if you want to manually add them click the icon next to their name. Then when you are happy unfollow the remainder. Be patient this may take a while.
Please only use this once per day as you risk being blocked by twitter!
UPDATE – some spammers are sending messages via the @ system – this current version will NOT unfollow them – I am working on an update which will target these people specifically – watch this space
This software was designed to unfollow people that do not engage – not those that spam
Check out the beta version of the tool for free here: Twitter unfollow tool
Let me know what you think and please re-tweet this post with your comments.
WARNING this tool is NOT for everyone – I recommend this tool only for business users of twitter who want (and can afford) to lose a number of people they follow.
Update 5 Sept 09 – I’m just finishing a wordpress plugin for twitter and other social media microblogging sites. Its purpose is to integate and automate some of the mundane cross publishing in one easy to use application – if you are interested contact me through the ‘contact us’ page
UPDATE Jan 2010 – Due to a server change this code is no-longer functioning, We are looking for a new developer to update this – appologies
